Dual Language Program Now Available in Edison

English/Spanish Dual Immersion Program Coming to Washington Elementary

By Marisol De Los Santos February 6, 2025

The Edison Township Public School District is thrilled to announce a new English/Spanish Dual Language Program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, set to launch in the 2025/2026 academic year at Washington Elementary School. This program aims to equip students with the ability to speak, read, and write proficiently in both English and Spanish by the time they complete fifth grade.

Modeled after successful dual language programs in New York City Public Schools, the program will divide students into two groups: Spanish Learners and English Learners. Instruction will be split, with half the day dedicated to English language learning and the other half to Spanish. A team of certified English and Spanish language teachers will collaboratively deliver the Edison Township Public Schools approved curriculum to both groups of students.

According to the District website, Spanish was selected as the partner language due to its status as the fourth most spoken language globally, the abundance of available instructional resources, and its potential to serve as a foundation for learning other Romance languages such as French and Italian.

Parents and families are invited to attend informational sessions at Washington Elementary School on March 25 or May 13, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. To apply or learn more about the program, please visit the district website.
